The road to Vatican II — and the world it unmade
How a council convened to open the windows of the Church became a fault line that still runs through every Catholic family I know.

There is a photograph in my parents' hallway of my grandmother kneeling at an altar rail. She is not smiling — you did not smile in those photographs — but her hands are folded with a certainty I have spent most of my adult life trying to understand. She believed something. She belonged to something. And whatever that something was, it did not survive the decade that followed.
This is not a polemic. I do not want to relitigate the Second Vatican Council on a webpage. But I want to describe, as honestly as I can, the world it inherited and the world it left behind, because that is the world Traddyland is set in.
What the council was actually for
John XXIII called the council to open the windows of the Church — his phrase, not mine. The intention was pastoral, not doctrinal. The Church would meet the modern world not by capitulating to it but by speaking its language.
We do not intend to preserve the ashes, but to keep the fire alive.
What it felt like from the inside
My mother was seventeen the year the vernacular Mass began. She has told me, more than once, that she remembers the exact Sunday the Latin stopped. She remembers because her father wept in the pew, and she had never seen him weep, not once, not at funerals, not when his brother died.
That is the register I want to write in. Not thesis and antithesis. Not who was right. Just — a man weeping in a pew, and a daughter who is now my mother, watching him, and eventually inheriting the ideology that grew in the shape of that grief.
