Traddyland
Memoir of a Radical Traditional Catholic. He was thirteen when they put him on the plane to Kansas.
By the age of thirteen, Lou Massett had been sent from his devout Catholic family in Bridgeport, New York, to St. Mary’s Academy in St. Marys, Kansas, the flagship boarding school of the Society of St. Pius X. It was the late 1980s. Archbishop Lefebvre had just consecrated four bishops against the will of Rome, and Lou’s father had wept for six weeks.
What followed was five years inside an institution built for certainty: the rules, the silences, the blanket parties, the priests. Around the school, the town of St. Marys was becoming a hub of American traditionalism and, in the years before Oklahoma City, a place federal agents combed for links to the militia movement. Lou came of age at the intersection of the two.
He left in his early twenties. He has watched the movement from the outside for thirty years since. When an FBI memo in 2023 named SSPX parishes as a domestic threat vector, and when Rome declared the Society in schism in July 2026, the story he had been writing for six years became the news.
Traddyland is not an exposé and not a settling of scores. It is a memoir of inheritance, fracture, and the cost of seeing clearly: how a community you love can become a place you cannot stay, and how to leave it without leaving the faith, or the family, behind.
Faith without charity became a dangerous, clanging cymbal.

Praise
Full press coverage →Louis Massett offers a lively insight into the ethos of Catholic traditionalism. His memoir is warm and funny in parts, poignant and soulful in others. I wanted to leap into the pages and hug the hurting souls. Massett recalls many of the events I was aware of as a seminarian in Winona, Minnesota, and I can identify with elements of his journey. I heartily recommend his book.Gary Campbell, former SSPX priest
A memoir the Church needs now.Where Peter Is
A candid and penetrating memoir of one man's journey out of the SSPX, and precisely the kind of testimony the Church needs at this moment.Homiletic & Pastoral Review
Traddyland is a powerful, beautifully written memoir that delivers far more than a personal story. It's an unflinching and sometimes tragic exploration of faith, identity, trust, betrayal.Mike Lally
Readers will feel his painful struggle reconciling his belief in Christ and the goodness of Catholicism juxtaposed with the radicalism of Traddyist Catholic members of the Society of Saint Pius X that broke away from the Catholic Church in 1988.Bonnie Gruttadaria
Massett does a wonderful job in this book, painting a vivid picture of his life growing up in a splinter group of staunch traditional Catholics.Amazon reader review
